From abroad / RDA vs Asaan Digital Account
A Roshan Digital Account (RDA) and an Asaan Digital Account serve different customers.
The main dividing line is residence: RDA is the State Bank of Pakistan’s remote account route for eligible non-residents. The Asaan Digital Account framework was designed for resident Pakistani individuals who need a simpler digital onboarding route.
Short answer: If you live outside Pakistan and need to send foreign earnings into Pakistan with repatriation rights, compare participating banks’ RDA products. If you are a resident Pakistani opening a simpler rupee account, ask a bank about its current Asaan Digital Account offering. Do not choose by the word “digital” alone.
Source status: Checked against State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) material on 11 October 2026. The Asaan limits below come from SBP’s 2021 framework; confirm a bank’s current product terms before opening an account.
| Question | Roshan Digital Account | Asaan Digital Account |
|---|---|---|
| Intended customer | Eligible non-resident natural persons and eligible foreign entities | Resident Pakistani natural persons under the 2021 SBP framework |
| Main use | Hold funds remitted from abroad, make permitted payments and investments, and repatriate eligible balances | Open a simplified PKR account through digital onboarding |
| Currency | PKR or an offered foreign currency | PKR in the 2021 framework |
| Funding | Primarily remittances from abroad; SBP lists limited exceptions for eligible local credits | Domestic account funding, subject to the bank’s current terms and account limits |
| Repatriation | Eligible funds are repatriable without separate bank or SBP approval | Not designed as a non-resident repatriable account |
| 2021 framework limits | Product limits depend on the participating bank and account type | Maximum credit balance and monthly debit limit of PKR 1,000,000 in the 2021 framework |
The two accounts are therefore not lighter and heavier versions of the same product. They solve different eligibility and money-movement problems.
SBP’s current RDA page says the facility is available to non-resident Pakistanis and, following a March 2026 expansion, to eligible non-resident foreign natural and juridical persons. Participating banks conduct their own due diligence, so eligibility does not guarantee approval.
For individual applicants, SBP describes a fully digital process and says accounts should generally be opened within 48 hours after complete documents are received. The official page lists PKR and foreign-currency accounts, current and savings options, and conventional or Shariah-compliant choices where offered by the bank.
Start with the RDA application guide for the documents and participating-bank links. If your bank asks for an account identifier, our IBAN explainer shows how an IBAN differs from a SWIFT/BIC.
The account is built around money remitted from abroad. SBP says local deposits are generally not allowed, although the framework permits specific credits such as investment proceeds and refunds tied to transactions made from the account.
An RDA can be used for ordinary permitted payments in Pakistan and for eligible investments offered under the scheme. SBP also states that funds in the account are fully repatriable without separate approval from the bank or SBP. That feature is central: it is not something to assume for an ordinary resident account.
A bank may still apply its own onboarding, screening, product and service rules. Read the bank’s schedule of charges and product disclosure before sending a large amount.
SBP introduced the Asaan Digital Account within its 2021 digital onboarding framework for resident Pakistani natural persons. It uses simplified customer due diligence and digital identity checks. The framework lists a valid identity document, a live photo and verification through NADRA among the onboarding controls.
The same framework sets the account in Pakistani rupees and lists both a maximum credit balance and a monthly debit limit of PKR 1,000,000. These are framework figures published in 2021, not a promise that every bank uses the same product name, channel, fee schedule or current limit in 2026.
Ask the bank three direct questions before applying:
Choose an RDA comparison if all three points are true:
Choose an Asaan Digital Account comparison if you are resident in Pakistan and want simplified digital onboarding for a rupee account within the bank’s current limits.
If you have moved countries recently, do not guess your status from citizenship alone. The account frameworks use residence and eligibility tests, while banks must complete their own checks. Ask the bank which account it can lawfully offer based on your present residence and documents.
Before submitting either application, write down:
This turns a vague “RDA vs Asaan Digital Account” choice into a short eligibility check. It also makes bank comparisons easier because fees and services can vary even when the regulatory account type is the same.
Can a resident Pakistani open an RDA?
RDA is a non-resident facility. A bank must confirm eligibility from your current status and documents.
Can an overseas Pakistani use an Asaan Digital Account instead?
The 2021 Asaan Digital Account framework describes resident Pakistani natural persons. An overseas applicant should ask a participating bank about RDA rather than assuming a resident account is available.
Is an RDA always a foreign-currency account?
No. SBP says RDA may be opened in PKR or in an offered foreign currency.
Does an Asaan Digital Account have repatriation rights?
The Asaan framework is not presented as a non-resident repatriable account. Do not assume RDA-style repatriation applies.
Are the PKR 1,000,000 Asaan limits definitely current?
They are the limits in SBP’s 2021 framework inspected for this page. Confirm the bank’s current limits and terms before applying.
