How Pakistan’s teenager account works

SBP’s teenager account is a PKR bank account or wallet for resident Pakistanis aged 13 to 18.

Short answer Resident Pakistanis aged 13 to 18 can open a teenager account or wallet individually or jointly, in person or through a digital channel. The account is in the teenager’s name and uses Pakistani rupees. A parent or guardian accepts legal responsibility and declares the source of funds. The provider must give the applicant a tracking ID and complete an eligible application within two working days after all requirements are met.

Who can open one

The framework covers resident Pakistani teenagers from age 13 through 18. It applies across banks, microfinance banks and electronic money institutions regulated by SBP.

The account or wallet is opened in the applicant’s own name. SBP allows individual or joint ownership. That is different from giving a teenager access to an adult’s account: the teenager is the account holder named in the provider’s records.

SBP also says the existing instructions for minor accounts continue to apply. A provider may therefore ask for information or checks beyond the short list in the teenager-account circular where another applicable rule requires them.

What the teenager and guardian provide

For the teenager, the provider must complete biometric verification where it applies, or use an alternative NADRA identity-verification mechanism.

For the parent or guardian, the circular requires:

  • the customer due-diligence requirements that apply to a natural person;
  • an indemnity, accepted digitally or on paper, taking full legal responsibility for activity on the teenager’s account; and
  • a declaration about the source of funds.

The provider must also carry out the controls that apply to the teenager account or wallet, including name screening, customer risk profiling and transaction monitoring.

The SBP consolidated onboarding framework explains the broader information providers may collect for natural-person accounts. That can include identity, contact and source-of-funds information. The exact application screen and documents can still differ by provider.

Opening online or at a branch

SBP permits both face-to-face and remote onboarding. A bank or wallet provider may therefore offer the account at a branch, on a website, in an app or through another approved digital route.

A useful sequence is:

  1. Confirm that the provider is an SBP-regulated bank, microfinance bank or EMI.
  2. Find its teenager-account page or product inside the official app or website.
  3. Check which parent or guardian must participate in the application.
  4. Complete the identity, source-of-funds and consent steps.
  5. Save the tracking ID that the provider issues.
  6. Wait for confirmation that the account is open before trying to fund or use it.

The circular says opening should be instant once all requirements are complete, and in no case take more than two working days. It also requires a tracking number for status updates. That timing begins after the application is complete; it is not a promise that an incomplete submission will be approved automatically.

What the account can do

The teenager account or wallet is opened in Pakistani rupees. It is a savings account by default unless the applicant asks for another permitted account type.

SBP says the account can receive the rupee equivalent of foreign remittances. That does not make it a foreign-currency account, and the circular does not set the conversion rate or sending-provider fee. Those details depend on the formal remittance channel and the receiving provider. See receiving money from abroad in Pakistan for the identifiers and channels involved.

The product must include a physical and/or virtual debit card, plus online, internet or app-enabled banking. A provider may decide which card form and digital features it supplies.

What is not included

The framework excludes:

  • a cheque book or other negotiable instruments;
  • a credit facility; and
  • an overdraft facility.

A debit card spends money available in the account. It is not permission to borrow. Product pages should be read carefully where a provider advertises additional features, because the SBP teenager-account framework does not itself authorize a loan or overdraft.

The circular also does not publish one universal transaction-limit table or fee schedule for every provider. Check the selected bank or wallet’s current key fact statement and schedule of charges. Do not copy a limit from a different provider.

What happens at age 18

When the account holder reaches the age of majority, the same account or wallet is converted into a regular account or wallet after the required regulatory checks are completed.

Conversion is not the same as opening an unrelated new account. The provider may still need updated identity, contact, source-of-funds or customer-risk information before it changes the account status and services.

Keep the provider’s notification and complete the conversion steps through its official channel. A card, app session or transaction limit may be affected if required information is not updated.

Safety checks for a parent and teenager

Warning Apply only through the provider’s official branch, website or app. A bank or wallet employee should not ask for a PIN, password or one-time code in a call or message.

Before submitting:

  • confirm the domain and app publisher;
  • read the provider’s fees and limits for this exact product;
  • keep the application and tracking references;
  • check which adult is accepting legal responsibility; and
  • ask the provider how the account will be converted at age 18.

These checks organize the application. They do not replace the provider’s eligibility and customer-verification process.
