HBL account opening: online and at a branch

Short answer You can open an HBL account digitally through the HBL Mobile app or at any HBL branch. Online, HBL asks for your CNIC (computerised national identity card), mobile number, email address and a live picture. HBL’s Islamic Asaan Digital and Freelancer Digital accounts are for new HBL customers only. At a branch, bring your CNIC and proof of your income. The minimum balance depends on the account. For example, HBL’s Conventional Current Account needs a monthly average balance of Rs40,000, while its Asaan and freelancer digital accounts have no minimum balance.

How to open an HBL account online

HBL’s digital channel is its HBL Mobile app, which you can download from hbl.com/hblmobile ↗. HBL also has a Digital Account page for “All Pakistani Residents, 18+ and above”, with regular and Islamic accounts. It lists salaried, self-employed, landlord, housewife, student and freelancer customers.

The stages HBL publishes. HBL describes its digital onboarding in a table on its Freelancer Digital Account page:

  1. Customer verification. You give your CNIC number, CNIC issue date, mobile number and email address.
  2. Account preference. You choose conventional or Islamic, the account type and your preferred branch.
  3. Personal information. For example, your father’s name and your mother’s maiden name.
  4. Additional information. For example, your profession and field of work, which HBL uses for its risk assessment.
  5. Services. You can choose e-statements, SMS alerts and a debit card.
  6. Picture upload. HBL asks for a live picture as the last step.

For this account, HBL says the documents are “Valid CNIC Front and Back Images”. It gives the turnaround time as “02 working days from the day of submission of application to open or decline an application”. HBL says it may ask for more documents, and that the requirements can change if SBP (State Bank of Pakistan) regulations change.

Steps in the app. HBL does not publish step-by-step in-app instructions on any hbl.com page we could read. Instructions shared on social media by unconfirmed accounts are not repeated here; follow the prompts in HBL Mobile or ask HBL on 111-111-425.

Verification. HBL’s digital account opening terms say that HBL may block a digital account if the holder does not verify their biometrics within 60 days of opening it. Operations are allowed again once the biometrics are verified. Under SBP’s rules for remote account opening, biometric verification comes first. If it is not possible, a bank uses NADRA Verisys with a check of your CNIC and mobile number pairing and an OTP or call-back. Failing that, the account can be opened with a debit block until you are verified.

Income declaration. For the HBL Asaan Digital, Asaan Digital Remittance and Freelancer Digital accounts, you submit a self-declaration online. In it you confirm that you are a resident Pakistani and that the source-of-income details you gave are true.

How to open an HBL account at a branch

Visit any HBL branch with your original CNIC and the documents below. HBL publishes a branch list ↗ on hbl.com. HBL’s terms say an Asaan Account’s initial deposit is received only at HBL branches, and that there are no service charges for opening or closing an HBL Asaan Account.

Documents HBL asks for

HBL’s “Account Opening Process” guide says the documents vary by account and may include:

  • Proof of identity: CNIC, SNIC or NADRA receipt for Pakistani nationals; Form B, CRC or birth certificate for minors; ARC, POC or passport for foreign nationals.
  • NADRA verification: biometric verification, or a NADRA Verisys report where biometrics cannot be captured.
  • Proof of address: biometric verification, a utility bill or an office address.
  • Proof of income:
    • Salaried: an employer certificate, service or staff card, salary certificate, three months’ pay slips, or a pensioner book or card.
    • Non-salaried: a declaration form.
    • Housewife, minor or student: details of the person who provides the funds and their source of income.
  • Special cases: 4 photographs, an indemnity form and a vernacular form if you cannot sign or have a shaky signature. A minor needs a student ID card, or a court order where a guardian was appointed. A housewife gives a housewife declaration. A visually impaired person signs an undertaking.

For its Conventional Current Account, HBL accepts a CNIC or SNIC, NICOP (National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis) or POC (Pakistan Origin Card) as the identity card. It asks for proof of income of the account holder and/or the person who supports them financially.

HBL accounts for individuals

This table lists only what HBL’s own pages state. HBL says fees in its KFS (Key Fact Statement) may change on a half-yearly basis.

Account Currency Minimum balance or deposit Notes from HBL
HBL Conventional Current Account PKR Monthly average balance of Rs40,000, “or else service charges as per SOBC” Current account, so no profit is paid
HBL Asaan Account (in-branch or digital) PKR Not stated on the pages we read Maximum credit balance PKR 3 million, monthly debit limit PKR 1 million (KFS, April 30, 2026); free PayPak debit card for the first year
HBL Islamic Asaan Digital Account PKR No minimum balance Resident Pakistanis; new-to-bank individuals and minors; based on Qard
HBL Nisa Asaan Account PKR Initial deposit Rs100; no minimum balance Women aged 18 and above, resident Pakistanis, new-to-bank only; monthly debit limit PKR 1 million
HBL Freelancer Digital Account PKR, with a linked foreign currency account No minimum monthly balance Resident freelancers aged 18 and above; current account only; new-to-bank only
HBL Islamic PLS Account PKR Open with Rs100 Savings account based on Mudaraba; profit paid monthly

HBL’s pages disagree on one Asaan limit. The Islamic Asaan Digital Account page gives a maximum credit balance of PKR 1,000,000. HBL’s current account KFS gives PKR 3 million for the Asaan Account “(In-branch/ Digital)”, and so does SBP’s framework. The Nisa Asaan page gives both figures. Confirm with HBL before you rely on the higher limit.

HBL’s terms say its Basic Banking Accounts and regular saving accounts are free to open and maintain, with no minimum balance condition. We don’t publish profit rates. For current rates, see HBL’s rate sheet (July 1 to September 30, 2026 ↗). All charges are in HBL’s Schedule of Bank Charges, July to December 2026 ↗.

Asaan Account rules from SBP

An Asaan Account is SBP’s simplified account for people with limited proof of income. Under SBP’s Consolidated Customer Onboarding Framework (BPRD Circular No. 01 of 2025, July 25, 2025), a bank Asaan Account opened digitally or in person has these limits:

  • a maximum credit balance of PKR 3,000,000;
  • a debit limit of PKR 1,000,000 a month.

SBP allows credits above the limit for profit, return on deposit and foreign inward remittances, subject to the bank’s risk assessment. SBP says no charges may be imposed for breaching a limit. One person can open only one Asaan account in a single bank. HBL’s terms add that if you hold an HBL Asaan Account, you cannot open other types of HBL accounts, and HBL may close any additional accounts.

Konnect by HBL

Konnect is HBL’s branchless banking service. HBL says you can register in the Konnect Mobile App with a valid CNIC and a PTA-registered mobile number:

  1. Download the app.
  2. Select “Register New Account”.
  3. Give the details the app asks for.
  4. Set your login ID, password and MPIN.
  5. Wait for a confirmation SMS from 8425.

If you live abroad

Overseas Pakistanis can open HBL’s eBanc Roshan Digital Account online from hbl.com/personal/rda ↗. HBL says accounts are opened within 48 hours once all requirements and documents are complete. See receiving money from abroad.

Warning HBL’s card safety guidance says never share your PIN with anybody and don’t hand over your card to any bank official. Don’t give card information over the phone unless you made the call, and keep your user ID and password confidential. HBL’s outbound caller ID in Pakistan is 14250/14251. On its official LinkedIn page in July 2026, HBL said it never calls customers from 111-111-425; that number only receives calls. If you suspect misuse of your card, call HBL PhoneBanking on 021-111-111-425.
