To close a bank account in Pakistan, ask the bank for its current closure process, clear every pending debit or credit, return or disable the access tools it requires, and keep the written closure confirmation. The State Bank of Pakistan’s fair-treatment framework says a bank should not charge an account-closure fee.

Sources checked: 29 October 2026. Banks can set their own forms and verification steps, so confirm the current process with the bank that holds the account.

Before you submit the request

A closure request is easiest when the account has no unresolved money movement. Check for:

  • a remaining balance that needs to be withdrawn or transferred;
  • a negative balance, financing instalment, fee or other amount owed;
  • cheques already issued but not yet presented;
  • card purchases or transfers that are still pending;
  • standing instructions, direct debits and recurring subscriptions;
  • salary, pension, benefit, dividend or remittance payments sent to the account;
  • a linked loan, card, safe-deposit box or investment relationship;
  • a legal hold, lien, court order or regulatory restriction.

Move incoming payments first and give the sender the replacement account details. Download statements and tax certificates you may need later. Once the account is closed, app access can end and older documents may take longer to obtain.

If the account is simply inactive, do not assume it has already closed. A dormant bank account remains a bank account and normally needs reactivation or another verified process before the balance can be moved.

The usual closure sequence

The exact channel differs by bank, but the underlying steps are similar.

  1. Ask for the current closure form or written instructions. Use the bank’s official website, helpline, app or branch.
  2. Verify the account holder. The bank may require the original CNIC or another identity document, a signature check, biometric verification or a digital authentication step.
  3. Settle the balance. Give instructions for a remaining credit balance and pay any valid amount owed.
  4. Deal with unused access tools. The bank may ask for unused cheque leaves, cards or other instruments, or may record them as destroyed or blocked.
  5. Cancel linked instructions. Move direct debits and recurring payments and confirm that future credits will not be sent to the closing account.
  6. Submit the signed request. Keep a dated copy, acknowledgement number or secure message.
  7. Get confirmation. Ask for a letter, email or other durable record that states the account is closed and shows the effective date.

Do not destroy evidence of a pending dispute. If an unauthorized transaction, disputed fee or chargeback is open, ask the bank how closure affects the investigation and how it will contact or reimburse you.

How long should the bank take?

The State Bank of Pakistan’s Business Conduct and Fair Treatment of Consumers Regulatory Framework sets a maximum turnaround time of two working days for closing an individual account after the bank has received all required information or documents and completed the necessary verification.

The framework also says the bank should confirm closure within two working days. That clock does not erase practical dependencies. A bank may need an uncleared cheque, pending card transaction, lien or amount owed to be resolved before the request is complete.

If the bank cannot close the account because of a lien, regulatory action or another restriction, ask for the reason in writing and the specific step needed to regularize the account.

Can a bank charge an account-closure fee?

The SBP framework states that banks must not charge customers for closing an account.

That does not cancel a genuine debt already connected to the account. You may still need to pay an outstanding financing amount, card balance, service charge that arose before the closure request, or another valid liability. Ask for an itemized explanation if a bank describes one of those amounts as a closure charge.

Keep the final statement or settlement calculation. It helps distinguish a pre-existing amount from a fee imposed merely for closing the account.

Branch request or digital request?

Some banks accept an account-closure request through a digital channel, while others require a branch visit, especially when signatures, unused cheque leaves or multiple account holders are involved. The SBP framework sets the treatment standard; it does not make every bank use the same submission channel.

Use only contact details published by the bank. A caller, chat account or form that asks for your PIN, password or one-time code is not part of a legitimate closure process.

If you opened the account digitally, keep the identity details you used. Our guide to digital bank account opening in Pakistan explains the verification records banks commonly collect.

Joint and special accounts

A joint account may need instructions from every holder, or from the holders allowed by the account mandate. The bank should apply the signed operating instructions rather than assume that one holder can close the relationship.

A minor account normally involves the guardian and the account’s mandate. An account belonging to a deceased customer follows succession, nomination and estate procedures; it is not an ordinary voluntary closure. Ask the bank for its deceased-customer checklist.

Business, partnership, trust and company accounts also require authority under their governing documents. This guide covers individual consumer accounts.

What proof should you keep?

Keep enough information to show that the request was completed:

  • the dated closure form or secure-message copy;
  • the bank’s acknowledgement or service-request number;
  • the final statement showing the balance disposition;
  • a receipt for returned cheque leaves or cards, if issued;
  • the closure confirmation and effective date;
  • correspondence about a lien, dispute or outstanding amount.

Check one more time after the bank’s stated processing period. The account should no longer accept ordinary transactions, and any linked card or cheque book should be unusable. Ask the bank for the safest verification method rather than sending a large test payment.

If the bank delays or refuses without a clear reason

First complain to the bank through its official complaint channel. Identify the date of the complete closure request, attach the acknowledgement and ask for a written outcome.

If the bank does not resolve the complaint or the answer is unsatisfactory, the SBP consumer-protection process points customers to Banking Mohtasib Pakistan for complaints within its jurisdiction. Keep the bank’s complaint reference because the escalation route expects evidence that the bank had a chance to respond.

For questions about the correct route, use the current information on the SBP consumer-protection page. Do not send CNIC images or account statements to an address copied from social media.
